To see pieces ORTU collaborated on: Page Thirty segment begins at 4:17 CBS Los Angeles episode ![]() Do you see a pattern here? All joking aside, the pattern is the essential component in the fabrication of a leather garment. Think about a house. Does it really matter which color will be used to paint the rooms if the foundation is wobbly and the walls resemble the Leaning Tower of Pisa and the house will crumble in a few months? It's the same thing for a leather jacket, if one arm is longer than the other and the jacket doesn't close properly: does it matter which color leather we'll use? It takes years for a leather specialist to master the craft of making the pattern for the perfect leather jacket and become a true pattern maker. Usually, fashion manufacturers or fashion designers who are not specialized in leather leave it to a specialist. They don't have the luxury to allocate the hundreds of hours required to truly master the art of the leather garment pattern. One of the most challenging aspects (and where most irreversible mistakes come from) is the seam allowance. The seam allowance is basically the extra space left in each panel at the cutting stage to allow for the sewer to stitch (or glue) the pieces of the leather garment together. Each pattern piece has a specific allowance (3/8''in, 1/4'' in, etc). The lining on the inside of the leather jacket also needs to respect this rule. Seam allowance in the leather apparel world is different than in fabric. Using a pattern from a fabric item to make a leather piece will not work. Another complication is that each leather hide is different from the next and varies in size, thickness, with its own irregularities. The process of translating the pattern into different sizes called grading also requires specific seam allowances. All of this makes the hard pattern something of a work of art. This specialized work ensures that the sample maker gets to work with a solid and bulletproof base. If you need patterns made for leather jackets, leather pants, leather dresses, leather tops etc, please reach out to info@ortuleather ![]() One of the ways Ortu leather makes its retailer clients money is through private label. Private label essentially means that we offer a retailer options to expand and widen its existing product offering into leather apparel, leather bags and other items. Increase sales and profit margins. We collaborate with US based fashion retailers big and small (from high end department store to luxury boutique) and help them increase sales and capitalize on real time consumer demand. Much like in the current "Fast Fashion" trend, with all production done in Los Angeles and nothing outsourced, this offers a speed to market advantage. Some of our clients start small and feature a few sample items online at first and once sales gather momentum, will expand their offering and bring the physical inventory whether it be garments, bags and other items into their brick and mortar stores. Others will build upon their existing retail store data, focusing on their top selling leather items. For example a retail buyer may ask us to replicate or do a "twist" on a leather jacket that he moves a lot of units of. The sales floor team may have received a lot of requests for specific color options, a slightly lower price point, etc. In this case, Ortu Leather works to create a customized line, being mindful of keeping construction (cut and sew) and materials (leather hides, hardware, trims, etc) at the buyer's target production price. Methods to get private labels started. We noticed retailers who have no experience manufacturing private label goods sometimes fear the development process. They're afraid it'll be too tedious and expensive. In reality it is pretty simple to achieve. There are a few solutions to get started quickly and easily. - option 1: a client asks us to make a version of a brand item that sells well in their store(s). - option 2: we show our client "on trend" women or men leather jacket styles that we can start producing instantly and ship out to their stores very quickly. - option 3: we start from scratch with our client's designer tech pack or inspiration piece and build out the item from pattern to finished product, anything from a leather jacket, leather skirt a leather handbag or a leather duffle or backpack. From the concept to the final garment/bag Ortu leather is set up to cover all bases in the supply chain from sourcing to finished product. We are able to accommodate a wide range of clients from Anthropologie, and Barney's New York to the stand alone store operation ie clothing retailers, boutique owners, etc. We speak the retailer's language and we're here to help generate more sales, with healthy profit margins, in a nutshell: make more money If you're interested in Ortu Leather becoming your made in USA manufacturing partner or simply expanding your private label leather clothing assortment: please reach out to info@ortuleather.com A few of the tones, trends and key colors on offering at Ortu leather.
